Free-Standing Lecture: Language in Performance

Downloads Spring Semester 2020

Introduction

This page contains the material that we cover in the sessions of the lecture, i.e the PowerPoint presentation and the link to the podcast as well as handouts.
It also contains or references to texts, which are required reading and study material.
All of the above handouts, podcast or Powerpoint presentations and reading texts must be covered, especially if students miss a session.

In the last column there are links to PDFs with excerpts from other sources which cover the same ground as we have dealt with in class, often from a different angle. It is useful for students to be aware of alternative approaches to the topics which the lecture covers, which is why such further reading is very important for an understanding of the concepts we deal with in this lecture.

Information on  the submission of the 'take-home messages'

To stem the flow of emails on this topic:
  • Formulate your own messages, do not copy them from other students.
  • Compile them in this list /  table, not on individual sheets for each message (save trees...).
  • Short statements, perhaps a couple of sentences each, but certainly not a whole lengthy summary, are all that is required, Clearly content is more important than number of words, so quality not quantitiy.
  • Submit the lists in  a hard copy, i.e. as a print-out(!), either in my pigeonhole at the secretariat or in the box outside it a the dates listed below
  •  The piece of paper will do, no folders or plastic covers are needed (and they only clutter up my already cluttered office...)

Session 8: Insects Caught in Amber

As an example for a musical (?) performance on the right-hand side of the spectrum (Slide 15, "Perpetuation in recordings") here is an example of yours truly recording a song with his two triplet brothers; the song is a tribute to song writer John Prine, who died of Covid-19 on 7 April. The song is also on my facebook page.

Session 7: Ideologies, Tradition and Authenticity

Only one song today, The Cruel Mother, (Child Ballad 20) but a haunting one and one you can sing along with.

The social stigma of children born out of wedlock (with the woman usually being abandoned by the child’s father as well as her family) was such that there were periods in history where the number of executions for infanticide were higher than for witchcraft.
